Nothing could fill the soul more...

What do you call a place where you feel time flies and stands still all at the same time... A place where you long for the comfy bed under the draped mosquito net only to hear the hyenas calling at night as they pad past your tent in the moonlight.... A place where you long for the cheery good morning wake up call because it means coffee around an ever present black tin pot around the smouldering embers of a leadwood fire, as the sun turns the sky a beautiful orange pink.. what do you call a place where the wind caresses your skin on game drive and your mind feels still and your heart Happy... where around every morning could be a elephant herd with a baby throwing it's little trunk around, or a pride of lazy lions or an incredible pack of 20 yapping painted dogs (wilddogs). This place where your heart feels at home, where the management and the staff and the whole team (Isaac, Michel, Wanda, Violet, Tim, and the amazing chefs) make you feel like friends... This place that makes you feel you've been here your whole life, and yet you'd still never want to leave. The quietness, the stillness, the wilderness, the authenticity of being around friendly people in the beautiful of nature... Where is this you might ask... Pungwe.

As Africa should be seen

Thank you to everyone at Pungwe for a truly sublime experience. I was able to connect to the African bush more than anywhere else I've been so far. From the once in a lifetime game viewing to the attentive and beautiful people that make up the Pungwe family, it was a stay I won't ever forget.

The bush at its best!

This is a must go! Staying here really gives you the bush experience as it should be. With only 4 tents, a maximum of 8 people can stay in the camp. No fences, no electricity and animals walking through the camp. The rangers are great during the game drives en walks and have a lot of knowledge about the busy. It has been the best experience of our trip!

Liked · The fact that it is unfenced inside a huge Game Reserve made it even more exciting. We loved being “off grid” with just enough electricity to charge our phones and a small mobile signal to send a few messages, rather than being fully on the internet all day. The simple large tented accommodation was more than adequate and the bedding was luxurious, adding great comfort to a tented Safari break. The food was great and the staff were attentive, accommodating and knowledgeable about their environment. We saw the Big Five and many more animals. The Game Drives were excellent. At night we heard the deep sounds of lions calling close by. We thoroughly recommend Pungwe as a wonderful, peaceful, relaxing, easily accessible, enjoyable Safari Camp.

What an amazing place

We stayed at Pungwe for the first three days of our honeymoon. All I can say is wow! The staff were fabulous and that includes all the ladies who looked after the camp especially Violet and Lucky, the Chef Rob, and our tracker and guide Isaac and Wander. On our game drives the guys did their utmost to not only find all the animals we wanted to see but provide us with experiences, whether it was a lion mating or finding the right spot that a hippo would cross in front of us. Returning back to camp to a beautifully prepared tent complete with bath and exceptional food and service. Can’t recommend highly enough. No negatives except saying goodbye.

Absolutely spectacular!

We had the most amazing three nights at Pungwe! Actually indescribable! Isaac and Never were phenomenal guides! Rhino tracking and sighting on our morning walking safaris; cheetah, leopard and the entire big five! And coming home (because that’s exactly what it felt like) to Robbies sensational cooking and Michelle’s hospitality. It is true that three days in the Bush will feel like three weeks. We cannot wait to go back! The homely, authentic Bush experience was something I have never experienced! This is being in the Bush! This is experiencing Africa in all its elements!

Highlight of our South Africa experience

Pungwe Safari camp was definitely the highlight of our stay in South Africa. This was everything we could dream of for a safari. A tent with the luxury of a hotel room, wild animals right outside the camp, great food and above all - fantastic hosts... We truly felt like staying with friends we had known for a long time. If you want to experience the bush without the (number) feeling of the Kruger park - Pungwe Safari Camp is the place to stay. Many thanks to Michel, Isaac, Rob, Wonderboy and all of the staff members who made this an unforgettable experience.

This was truly what I was looking for - an African adventure! Food was so delicious thanks to Chef Robert. Out tent was extremely comfortable and not having electricity or WiFi or cell service made the entire experience so much better. The staff took such good care of us. Our guide and tracker made sure we saw all the Big 5 animals up very close. It was perfect from start to finish.

An Authentic African Bush Experience

Review of Pungwe Safari Camp

Reviewed 4 weeks ago via mobile on Tripadvisor

Stayed for 4 nights and loved the experience.
Tents with inbuilt toilets on a raised platform, no electricity, solar power during the day in the lounge area for charging batteries, oil lamps and hurricane lamps at night, no fencing of boundary, donkey boiler with firewood burning for hot water in shower, this is nishite.
The hyenas scratching the tent at night, the impala and francolins resting in the shade of the tent, the bull elephant munching on branches by the side of the tent, this is wild Africa at its best.
The staff were very efficient, the cook Robert could prepare 3 course menus with his limited resources, the game drives were excellent.
Our guide Issac and tracker Noelle were an excellent team and could give us unforgettable wildlife experiences as off roading was allowed.
Rare experience was seeing a Cheetah calling to his mate who was some distance away, and seeing 2 leopards , one male and one female, with their kill, hauling it up the tree, and that too on the same day. A very lucky day indeed.

 · The real authentic safari experience. Very small camp with only 4 tents, No fence, no electricity (except to charge the occasional battery), but plenty of hot water for the shower based on firewood. Of course there is no Wifi and very limited cell phone reception. This adds to the experience and makes you read books and relax in between safari's.

Authentic African Safari Experience

Pungwe is a jewel in the Manyeleti game Reserve, Its a small intamate bush camp only 8 guests in total.

It is a totaly off the grid camp meaning no electricity even the fridges run on gas This gives it a wonderful remote authentic bush feel which is sometimes lost at the more luxurious lodges

It has 4 tented rooms When I say tented they are nice solid tents with a solid thatch roof structure over the tent ( see photos ) The shower water is heated with what they call heating donkey its a drum that has the water in heated by a log fire to deliver the hot water.

The main dinning /bar/lounge area is quite eunique as there is a permanent camp fire that burns next to the main dining area were you can grab a bush coffee brewed on the fire at any time.

The food was simple dew to the lack of electricity but it was tasteful and well varied

Game drives in the Manyaleti were fantastic and we saw everything.

If you want to unwind Pungwe is the place to be there is no wifi or cell signal but you do get intermittent reception when you are on gamedrive.

Second trip, better than amazing first trip

This was our second trip to Pungwe and we will be back again. We travelled from Brisbane, Australia. We stayed for 3 days in September 2017. We stayed 5 days in September 2018! Wow!, great time, and amazing sightings, we saw cheetah, leopards, lions, elephant, rhino, buffalo and much more. Our safari guides Never and Wonder, were brilliant, very friendly and they got us close to the most amazing animal sightings. We cannot thank them enough for the amazing trip. On 1 game drive in 1 hour we saw Cheetah, leopard, elephant and a large pride of lions. Birding was good too.
As per my last review in October 2017, you will not find better value for the chance of seeing the big 5 up and close. Pungwe is the best value for money place I know of around the Kruger national park. you will see the same animals and sightings as the people from the other lodges who are paying 4 or 5 times as much.
Pungwe is a comfortable authentic safari camp. the rooms are large, and the beds are very comfortable. I love the fact you sleep in a tent under a large thatch roof. Ensuite bathrooms with hot and cold water and a bath - which my wife loved. Only 4 chalets means maximum 8 guests so its nice and intimate and not overcrowded.
The meals were good, and the camp situated in a nice environment where the animals can roam freely around. We felt safe at all times, but really enjoyed the fact that we had elephants walking through the camp at night.
Overall I would not hesitate to recommend Pungwe to anybody.
Michel, your safari camp delivered a truly wonderful time for us again. Cant wait to get back to Pungwe. Gary and Angela.

Beautiful stay in Manyeleti

Great tents with large bathrooms and an inviting and big common area. Food was very good with coffee and tea all day long. We had elephants and hyenas in the camp which was very exciting. Two game of four game drives with remarkable sightings, seeing wild dogs interacting with hyenas, a leopard with cubs and a lion pack. Lots of game around, only the guides could explain a bit more about the wildlife.

Pungwe Camp, the real Africa!

Pungwe camp in Manyaleti Reserve was an amazing and thrilling stay. This camp is small but very luxurious. Food was delicious and expertly prepared by long time chef Robert. The tents are large, covered with a thatched roof and full bathroom even a huge tub and plenty of hot water! We had two drives each day and sae the big 5 on every drive! The reserve is unfenced so animals from Kruger, Sabi, and Timbavati roam freely. Manyaleti is a large reserve with few camps so one won't have hoards of trucks at each sighting. In fact, most of time we were in the only truck! Guides were knowledgeable about tracking and finding animals but did not talk much. This is just fine if you have several safaris.Pungwe is an historic camp that has a tradition of 30 years. Even the firepit with cast iron kettle has been in the same spot for decades. With crisply ironed sheets, delicious cusine, comfy beds, and abundance of animals, Pungwe is an exceptional value and experience.

Staying at this place made our holidays unforgettable. Pungwe is located close in the Kruger area, which makes it an ideal place to spot wildlife. We spent three nights in April and got a chance - due to our experienced ranger - to see all big five, shoot amazing pictures and create beautiful memories. The huts / tents are elegantly furnished and provide you with everything you need. In the comfy common areas you can share your adventures with the other guests over a cup of tea / coffee. Meals were African cuisine and always delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful with whatever we requested. We highly recommend this camp!

5 Star Safari Experience

Pungwe was a better than I dreamed. It is a small location that holds a maximum of 8 people and is owned by Michel who will often sit with your group and tell your the most interesting stories about his life. When we arrived to the reserve we immediately saw wild animals before we even made it to the camp site. Once we were at the site the guides took us to our beautiful tents which were phenomenal. The beds were comfortable and somehow they made the mosquito netting look magical. The bathrooms had hot water for showers which I was not expecting out in the bush. At night you could hear the animals in the campsite which was incredibly cool to listen to while you were laying there. Some of our braver members sat on their porches and watched them through the night. The camp also cooked all of your meals and it was the best food we had the entire trip. The chefs rotate but we got lucky and had Robert cooking for us. If I could have brought him home with me I would have. Best food I've ever eaten. And the bread he made...words can't describe it. I'm not much of a bread person but I ate two pieces at almost every meal. Our guides were also amazing. Issac took us out immediately after our arrival the first afternoon and that evening we saw 4 of the big 5. He saw things hidden that I never would have seen. By the next morning we had seen the missing member of the big 5. The guides took us on night safaris, day safaris, a bush walk, and even up to a look out point to see the entire reserve. They were extremely good about communicating with each other to determine where the best sites were but also communicating with us to determine what our top wish list animals were. It was a perfect stay. Just a word of advice, make it your last stop on the trip because nothing will be able to top it. We will definitely be returning.

Amazing Authentic Safari Experience!

Pungwe Safari Camp was the highlight of our trip to Africa! I can't begin to tell you how much we loved this place. We arrived late, which did not seem to bother the staff. They quickly prepared a snack and we were off on safari within an hour of our arrival ..... Our safari guide, Issac, was amazing! He would see the animals long before any of us. He always asked for our input, as several times there were many different sightings to choose from. He would take us off the road and very near to the animals. Within 24 hours of arrival we had viewed more animals than we ever imagined.

Best game viewing ever

It was our first time at Manyeleti Reserve and Pungwe Safari Camp and it will surely not be our last.
We go to the bush fairly often but can honestly say that we have never experienced such superb game viewing. Every game drive was special - we saw the "Big 5" several times as well as wild dogs, hyenas, cheetahs, honeybadger!
The staff is friendly and attentive and the food of excellent quality.
The camp is basic and rustic but has everything you need - except for electricity.
However, the camp is run with solar power to be able to charge your cell phones and a so-called "donkey system" ensures you have hot water to shower.
